The young Carl Friedrich Gauss, a mathematical genius, discovered this formula at around the age of seven. Legend has it that his teacher kept the class busy by asking them to add all the numbers from 1 to 100. While the other students laboriously tackled the problem, Gauss immediately recognized a pattern. He noticed that the numbers could be divided into pairs that each added up to the same sum: 1 + 100, 2 + 99, 3 + 98, and so on. Each of these pairs added up to the same number.
